elders

We embrace a historic biblical model of church governance and oversight, led by a board of Elders qualified according to 2 Timothy 2 and Titus 3. All of our pastors and campuses fall under the leadership of this board. The task of our Elders is to seek and discover God’s direction for our church, and to lead within the church body. Although each of our Elders may serve and volunteer at a particular campus, they always represent Vista Community Church.

GET TO KNOW OUR ELDERS …

Pastor Mike Smith

As our Lead Pastor, Mike is the primary teaching pastor, developer of our long-range strategy (in cooperation with a Strategic Leadership Team), and the director of the daily operations, administration and ministry. A former Air Force officer, Executive Pastor and Church Planter, Pastor Mike and his wife Tammy, college sweethearts, have two sons, Spencer (’96) and Shay (’98). The Smiths, along with several other dedicated families, launched Vista as a plant from Heritage Christian Church in January of 2007. Pastor Mike loves his family and the church and is most satisfied when those he loves are following Jesus, trusting God and living out the Biblical calling of their life to be Worshipful, Relational, and Missional people for the good of the world and to the glory of God. “There’s nothing better than when the church is being a healthy church!” (send email)

Pastor Gary Treichler

Gary serves our church as an Equipping Pastor, focusing on leadership development and training, as well as Biblical Community through groups. He and his wife, Kim, are parents to a son and daughter (and their spouses) and six grandchildren. The Treichlers have been at Vista since 2009. Gary says he loves the powerful teaching from God’s Word, based on the centrality of Jesus Christ and the gospel message. He appreciates that we take transformation seriously–not just hearing God’s Word but applying it in the context of Lifegroups, where we process the message and ask how are we to implement God’s word into our lives. He also resonates with our value of remaining simple, so that we have more time to have ministry with our neighbors, co-workers, parents, clubs and others who need to see and hear about Jesus. His long-term hopes and goals for our church are to see us as multiplying people who take 2 Timothy 2:2 seriously: that we would entrust to reliable men and women who in turn will pass it on to others. Paul Vorst

Paul has worked in both management and maintenance of commercial buildings for the past twelve years at Kohr Royer Griffith, Inc., a company that has been serving central Ohio for over one hundred years. He and his wife, Kelly, are parents to sons Micah (’86), and Josiah (’88), who is daddy to their beautiful granddaughter, Kylee (’08). Paul and Kelly joined the Vista church planting team as it launched from Heritage Christian Church in Westerville, where he served as an elder and full-time pastor from 1991-2002, and an elder and bi-vocational pastor until leaving to start Vista in 2007. Paul enjoys the grassroots feel of the church where everyone is encouraged to be Jesus to their community by being themselves in Christ. He foresees Vista growing to more sites in the future, offering many safe places around the metro area for those looking for answers to the “God things” in their lives, and for those who are in need of emotional and relational healing. Since both Paul & Kelly work at the same workplace, they have the unique opportunity to make the morning and afternoon commute together and use some of that time praying for many things, and especially pray for the welfare of Vista Community Church – that they will be a part of the global family of God that lives and works together in unity, expanding God’s kingdom here on earth! Tod Heath

Tod grew up in Ohio and Indiana, and attended Indiana University from 1972-78, where he met his wife, Nancy. He also attended the University of Chicago from 1978-1984, which led to degrees in history and in the history and philosophy of science. He met wife Nancy at IU through mutual friends and never looked back. The Heaths lived in the Cleveland area until 1987, where Tod was a teacher, and have lived in Westerville since then, where Tod has been a sales representative in HVAC. Isaac, Adam, and Emily are their kids, all married and living near here with their spouses and kids. Tod says “it is quite an extravaganza and a VERY GREAT BLESSING.” Tod continues at Miller Component Sales (‘til death do them part), reads, plays guitar, runs slowly, plays basketball close to the floor, and mostly seeks to bring all thoughts captive to Christ. He wants to see Vista stay humble, and to see that we must BB4DO. Shalom. (send email)

Scott Travis

Scott grew up in Glasgow, Kentucky and attended Western Kentucky University where he received his degree in accounting. Upon graduation, he moved to Lexington to begin his career and marry his childhood friend, Lisa. Scott and Lisa have two grown children, Rick (27) and Alex (23).  In 2002, Scott accepted a job with AEP and relocated the family to Dublin. Their family began attending Vista in 2008.  While at Vista, Scott has served in numerous volunteer roles including lifegroup leader, lifegroup coach, set-up and offering team, Worthington launch team, and a member of the Elder Advisory Board. With God’s support, Scott is dedicated to seeing Vista continue to love God and love people – reaching the lost and supporting those in search of Christ.  Scott prays that Vista will continue to be a welcoming, safe and loving place to worship God and live in community with others.
