When the crowds of working class followers began to gather around Him, Jesus taught them the most important single teaching in human history. He began with an unexpected set of sayings that historically have come to be called the Beatitudes. Then, as now, the hearers of Jesus’ words can’t help but lean in to understand more fully what the teacher meant as He taught on that mountainside, launched into the Sermon on the Mount, and changed the world forever.
